Political and economic uncertainty as well as the COVID-19 pandemic prevails in Lebanon in 2021. Due to the economic situation some consumers have been forced to trade down to more affordable local brands and private label in home care, but a growing focus on hygiene and convenience has ensured sales remain stable in most areas.
Home care has been one of the least impacted industries in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and has even benefited from the increasing attention to hygiene and sanitation. With that being said, the product area is not as essential as food and beverages for example.
Maids are typically responsible for carrying out different cleaning jobs in the home, even among mid- to lower-income households with monthly rates being generally affordable. Upper-income households commonly employ two or more maids.
Lebanon’s economy struggled during the review period and as a result more affordable home care products grew in popularity both poor Lebanese households and Syrian households, as well as the many Palestinians spread across the country. These low income households are more likely to purchase one generic surface cleaner for use across the home and no other home care products.
Although Lebanon’s infrastructure needs a lot of investment, it is still relatively easy to transport goods, with a good road infrastructure and most roads being paved. There are no significant access issues except perhaps for some really remote villages in the mountains, especially the northern areas of the country and some remote southern areas too.
Over the forecast period, lower-priced domestic brands will become more popular as the price of importing increases. Nonetheless, Turkish brands will continue to dominate, followed by Iraqi, Jordanian, and maybe even some Egyptian products.
