The economic crisis rumbled on in Lebanon during 2022, putting severe pressure on demand across all home care categories, while major issues with the supply of electricity and water had a strong influence on the laundry and dishwashing routines in many households. In addition, the waning impact of the COVID-19 pandemic undermined demand in some categories.
The deep political, social and economic crisis that has been in effect in Lebanon since early 2020 continued to profound impact on demand for home care during 2022. Social unrest erupted during the year and it expected to continue spreading.
Demand for home care remains under pressure in Lebanon due to the impact of the economic crisis, which has resulted in extremely high inflation. Nonetheless, generally speaking, local consumers tend to view many of the most important home care categories as indispensable as maintaining a clean and hygienic home is considered to be absolutely essential in virtually all Lebanese households.
Inflation continues to hit the finances of the vast majority of Lebanese consumers very hard. With the exchange value of Lebanese pound plummeting since the onset of the economic crisis in 2020, the cost of virtually all goods as denominated in local currency has increased fourfold to fivefold since the onset of the economic crisis, depending on the product’s category and country of origin.
While Lebanon’s infrastructure issues continued to deteriorate during 2022 as the economic crisis remained in effect, these issues are deeply rooted and therefore have long been causing hardship for local people. Nonetheless, while power cuts were already depressingly common, they have now evolved into extended periods without any electricity supply at all.
Moderate positive sales growth is expected to be seen across home care over the forecast period, with stability expected to return to the industry as no further economic shocks are expected to be seen in Lebanon. Nonetheless, the economic situation is expected to remain extremely challenging, with growth rates expected to remain minimal as a result.
