Although air care is not hygiene-related, the category witnessed a positive performance in 2021. After a poor performance in 2020, consumers returned to physical stores this year, and the general dependency of the category on impulse purchases meant the overall impact on air care was positive in this year, with current value sales returning nearly to the pre-pandemic level.
Another factor contributing to the return to growth in 2021 was that companies launched innovations in air care to stand out from the competition, and appealed to consumers by offering new products in the context of COVID-19. Glade, for instance, launched a 3-in-1 air freshener, which includes disinfectant and air sanitiser that claim to kill the virus that can cause COVID-19.
Spray/aerosol air fresheners continued to account for the most significant share of value sales in air care in 2021, and also saw the strongest growth. This is due to the widespread availability of these products, as well as constant promotions and discounts, which help to attract consumers over other formats, such as electric air fresheners, due to their high maintenance, short-term durability and higher prices.
E-commerce saw a strong increase in share in air care in 2020, due to home seclusion and fear of COVID-19, and this growth trend continued into 2021 and is expected to be maintained in the forecast period. The continued increase in online shopping offers a notable avenue for growth for air care, because of their small and light format of such products.
Companies are expected to offer dynamic innovation in scents to stand out from their rivals in the forecast period, including interesting combinations of fragrances. They will also attract consumers with natural ingredients, but are also likely to include antibacterial, air-purifying and/or air disinfecting technology, in the context of COVID-19.
Air care is set to maintain slow and stable retail volume and current value growth in the forecast period. Although growth is expected to be maintained, some consumers are likely to turn to alternatives such as essential oils for scent/fragrance.
