Sports nutrition looks set to perform strongly throughout the forecast period, with all categories projected to record impressive growth in volume and current value terms. Given that increased health-consciousness is expected to be a lasting legacy of the pandemic, growing participation in sports and fitness activities among the Irish population should continue to boost overall demand.
It is expected increasing maturity and growing competition will prompt more sports nutrition manufacturers to try to broaden the appeal of their products beyond sports and fitness enthusiasts over the forecast period. For example, more players are likely to adjust their marketing and distribution strategies to target consumers with busy, on-the-go lifestyles or individuals attempting to improve their nutritional intake and lose weight.
While the outlook for sports nutrition over the forecast period is positive, it will face greater competition from alternative product types such as protein supplements and sports drinks. The growing availability of low-fat drinking milk products and smoothies enriched with protein and other nutrients will also pose a threat.

Sports Nutrition
These nutritional products improve physical endurance, increasing muscle growth/development/mass, or speeding recovery after exercise. Sports nutrition is targeted at serious athletes and gym-goers, and their principal purpose is to build muscle and to boost energy. Sports Nutrition tracks two types of products: Protein and Non-Protein. Sports protein include bars, powder and ready-to-drink (RTD) offerings. Sports Non-Protein include products that do not have protein as its core ingredient. They can be used to repair muscle or as energy/endurance booster. Note: Mainstream sports nutrition products such as sports drinks (e.g. Gatorade) or energy drinks (e.g. Red Bull) are not included here. Energy and sports drinks are tracked in the Soft Drinks system.
