To control the spread of COVID-19 a range of measures were introduced in Switzerland, including the closure of sports clubs and gyms during the lockdown. This took a heavy toll on sales of sports nutrition in 2020 with it restricting the opportunities for consumers to carry out their usual workout routines.
Prior to COVID-19 sports nutrition had been enjoying strong and steady growth, with these products now available through a wide range of retail channels as well as through e-commerce and other non-store retailing channels. However, as demand grew so too did the number of players in the market with this putting downward pressure on prices and thus limiting even stronger value growth.
There were no changes in the leading positions within sports nutrition in 2020, with the top three players – Sponser Sport Food AG, Active Nutrition International GmbH and Wander AG – continuing to dominate despite disappointing sales results for the year. The brands of all three companies benefit from widespread distribution, including through leading grocery retailers Migros Genossenschaftsbund and Coop Genossenschaft, as well as enjoying credibility among the key consumers of sports nutrition.
Sports nutrition is expected to bounce back strongly from 2021. On the one hand many consumers are keen to get back in the gym and to start exercising again.
Convenience is expected to be another key growth driver in sports nutrition over the forecast period with the “on-the-go” aspect breathing new life into the category. New innovations are expected from manufacturers which may pose competition to existing sports protein products.
The three leading companies are set to maintain their top rankings over the forecast period as they are perceived as pioneers in sports nutrition in Switzerland. Their marketing activities have set standards in the category and their product innovation drives their momentum.
