Bread is an important staple of the Cameroonian diet, and accounts for most of value sales of baked goods, with only a couple of percent of value sales spent on pastries and cakes.
Artisanal products remain dominant in baked goods in Cameroon. At the end of the review period, virtually all of the local players present in baked goods offered unpackaged, unbranded artisanal products.
Throughout Cameroon, bread is widely considered to be one of the most essential staple foodstuffs. Unpackaged bread continues to dominate value sales, with artisanal products offered by independent local bakeries and the in-store bakeries of chained supermarkets such as Saker, Super U, Carrefour and Spar the most popular types of bread.
Baked goods is not expected to be impacted by COVID-19 in 2020. Bread continues to account for the bulk of value sales and even if the economy is seriously affected by COVID-19 during the forecast period, retail volume sales of bread will not be affected.
Unpackaged baked goods will continue to drive value sales over the forecast period. The main reason for this is that packaged products tend to have higher unit prices, driving consumers towards low-priced unpackaged baked goods.
One of the major drivers of sales growth in baked goods towards the end of the review period was the strong growth in numbers of supermarkets in the country and with it the rising availability of private label baked goods, albeit in unpackaged baked goods. In addition, the numbers of independent local bakeries are also rising.
