Men’s grooming suffered from the 2020 pandemic lockdowns, with muted current value and volume growth, as with men spending significant amounts of time at home, they shaved less etc. In 2021, with society opening up, the picture improved, with current value and volume registering healthy growth.
International players The Gillette Co and Société Bic continued to lead in men’s grooming during 2021, largely as a result of their dominance of men’s shaving. Such brands as Gillette Blue II and Gillette Mach3, as well as Bic’s eponymous brand, are widely distributed and well known to local consumers.
Shavette (foldable straight blade) razors are also seeing a re-emergence in popularity, despite them being more dangerous to use. The increase in demand for shavette razors is because they are considered more hygienic, since it is possible to change the half blade after each shave.
Men’s grooming will register muted but positive constant value growth over the forecast period. The full opening of society, combined with population growth, will contribute to value sales.
Prices are going up in barber shops significantly and over the forecast period, more and more men will opt to do their own shaving instead. This should benefit retail channels and in particular products such as razors and blades and pre- and post-shave.
Beards are becoming more popular and increasingly consumers will look for beard styling products that for instance give beards a softer and fuller appearance. Shavers and razors that are equipped with basic to advanced styling features will be in demand, as will oils, shampoos, gels and moisturizers to clean, brush and maintain the overall look of the beard.
