Tea pods or capsules are increasingly available in Singapore, both as plain tea and as mixes (with milk and/or creamer), and are compatible with coffee pod machines. Demand was initially driven by growth in pod machine ownership following Nespresso’s launch of its subscription model in 2020, which enabled Singaporeans to enjoy the convenience of receiving the products at home amid pandemic-imposed movement restrictions.
Singapore has witnessed the rapid entry of brands offering wellness support claims, such as Teapigs (from the UK), which offers a range of Happy Uplifting and Snooze Sleepy teas, in addition to Australia’s Planet Organic’s range of Mental Focus and Calming teas that target moods and mental states. Other new entrants include WHITETREE, which is produced in Japan and claims to be recommended by local medical practitioners by offering specific physiological benefits such as Detox and Beauty tea blends; Detox is for improving liver function, and is recommended for alleviating the effects of alcohol consumption, while Beauty aims to improve skin tone and restoration of hormonal balance, particularly for women.
Amid the availability of decaffeinated coffee that has emerged in Singapore as a result of consumers’ increasing health awareness, decaffeinated tea is similarly increasing in visibility – across both tea bags and instant tea options. Decaffeinated tea bags include Clipper Organic tea and Taylors of Harrogate, whilst decaffeinated instant tea is offered by the likes of Nitto.
