Although both on-trade and retail volume sales of tea were negatively impacted by COVID-19, on-trade sales were more severely hit, registering a heavy volume decline in 2020. This was due to consumer foodservice establishments being closed for dine-in for several months owing to national lockdowns, while limited operating hours also hampered trade, as the government sought to curb the spread of the virus.
Retail volume sales of tea declined consistently over the review period, while current value sales recorded strong growth due to continual rises in unit prices, particularly for local tea variety rooibos under other tea. This was due to ongoing unstable weather conditions, which continued to impact the local production of the latter with a drought in the Western Cape reducing the availability of raw materials.
The competitive landscape of tea remained fairly consolidated in 2020, led convincingly by National Brands Ltd and its wide product portfolio including Freshpak and Five Roses. However, its competitors experienced a shift in share as second-ranked Unilever South Africa Foods (Pty) Ltd and smaller players came under increasing pressure from private label lines.
