Fragrances witnessed a healthy recovery in 2021 as consumers started to return to more active work and social activities outside the home, with this being supported by the roll-out of Colombia’s vaccination programme. Having postponed purchases during 2020 due to home seclusion, some consumers looked to replenish supplies of their favourite fragrances.
Premium fragrances witnessed heavy losses in 2020 as consumers were forced to reign in their spending on non-essentials. Nonetheless, the category saw a healthy recovery in 2021 with these products benefiting from the fact that higher income consumers have in general been able to manage better through the COVID-19 crisis than lower income consumers.
E-commerce has thrived since the start of the pandemic as consumers have looked for special discounts, while players have focused on providing online promotions and promoting new product launches. Disruptions caused by the pandemic in 2020 forced many retailers to shift their focus online and to invest in enhancing their e-commerce capabilities.
Manufacturers are acutely aware of the restricted budgets of many consumers and this is likely to inform their strategies, at least in the first few years of the forecast period as people look to recover from the impact of the pandemic. Players could well seek to reduce the unit prices of their fragrances by introducing smaller, travel-sized or mini-sized packaging.
The growing focus on sustainability and the environment is set to affect both the ingredients and packaging for fragrances over the forecast period. Fragrances which contain natural and organic ingredients that have been sourced responsibly will be favoured, as well as products featuring eco-friendly packaging.
More personalised and niche offerings could create opportunities to broaden the appeal of fragrances. The approach of millennials and younger generations to fragrances is quite different from the older generations, with younger consumers more focused on experiences and individuality.

Fragrances
This is the aggregation of men's, women's and unisex mass and premium fragrances as well as fragrances sets/kits. The distinction between mass market and premium is normally price and label/positioning (mass fragrances rarely carry a designer label) and distribution. Also includes hair fragrances with a primary function of making hair smell good and not to be confused with hair oil and other styling/conditioning products with hair fragrances, whose primary function is to either condition or style over fragrance.
