COVID-19 emerged in the Balkans during the first half of March 2020, prompting governments across the region to place restrictions on the ability of their citizens to gather socially outside of the home. This has certainly applied in Bosnia and Herzegovina, with the horeca industry brought to a standstill by the government-mandated closure of all public meeting spaces for an extended period from the middle of March.
A state of emergency was introduced on 17 March, with a curfew imposed from 2000-0500hrs. Borders were closed on 25 March.
2019 saw rising demand across all categories of alcohol drinks in Bosnia and Herzegovina, with sales rising across both the on-trade and off-trade channels in all categories. Rising demand can be attributed mainly to rising income levels and the increasing sophistication of consumers.
The dominant position of beer in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s alcoholic drinks industry means that the list of leading players at industry level is heavily dominated by beer breweries. The leading international players continue to control the biggest regional breweries, offering popular regional brands originating mainly from Serbia and Croatia, which limits the ability of domestic brands to generate strong sales.
Bosnia and Herzegovina alcoholic drinks industry is expected to recover strongly from the significant sales declines that are expected across all categories over the course of 2020 due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Although some categories are expected to take up to three years to return to pre-COVID-19 sales levels, it is anticipated that consumption levels will rebound fully before giving way to the moderate and steadily positive sales growth that was in evidence in all categories prior to the onset of COVID-19 before the end of the forecast period.
