After being negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, and starting to recover in 2021, alcoholic drinks is performing very well in 2022, in line with consumption opportunities resuming once again. While inflation is taking place, this is having a minimal effect on overall demand.
In 2022, alcoholic drinks is benefiting from the full return to economic activities and the lifting of COVID-19-related restrictions. For example, major celebrations have resumed in 2022, such as New Year's and various religious celebrations, all of which create consumption opportunities for alcoholic drinks.
Per capita consumption of alcoholic drinks remains quite high in Laos. Drinking alcohol is socially acceptable in all parts of the country and this is not expected to change in the near future.
In 2022, Laos has a population of approximately 7.4 million.
Laos is a landlocked country surrounded by Myanmar and China to the north, Vietnam to the east, Cambodia to the south and Thailand to the west. It has no coastline and thus no seaports or harbours.
The legal minimum age for the purchase or sale of alcoholic drinks is 18-years-old, although no legal minimum drinking age is defined in law. However, the Laotian Law on Alcohol Control (dated 19 December 2014) mentioned individual responsibility that covered students, young consumers and employees and stated that they must be aware of alcohol and refrain from consumption whenever possible.
All alcoholic drinks sold in Laos attract sales tax of 10%, while imported products also face an additional import tax of 10%. Domestic products thus benefit from a tax advantage, which enables them to offer lower prices.
Despite global inflation expected to linger for at least the beginning of the forecast period, demand for alcoholic drinks will persist. Numerous sources have reported that Lao consumers will continue to organise festivals, religious events, and celebrations such as weddings, despite the ongoing economic uncertainty.
