Drinking milk is dominated by basic milk varieties – shelf stable milk in particular, which is among the most mature dairy formats in Bosnia-Herzegovina. With the expanding range and availability of more interesting diary alternatives in the country, consumers showed less interest in drinking milk products and its most popular variety, shelf stable milk, in particular.
Milk alternatives recorded the strongest retail value growth in drinking milk products over the review period. Milk alternatives is dominated by soy drinks, although other milk alternatives such as almond, hazelnut or rice milk are increasingly present.
Fresh milk also recorded a strong performance over the review period. Traditionally, shelf stable milk was the dominant format as it is more convenient for both consumers and manufacturers.
Large internationals control drinking milk products in Bosnia-Herzegovina through regional dairies, including Danube Foods, Meggle and Dukat. The differences between the three are often minimal.
An independent dairy manufacturer, Mljekara Padeni, achieved the strongest growth in its retail value share in drinking milk in 2018. This domestic manufacturer is entirely positioned in fresh milk, which is recording solid growth as an increasing segment of consumers with an interest in improving the “healthiness” of their nutrition regards less processed fresh milk superior in quality to the largely popular shelf-stable milk most large players focus on.
Another niche player with solid growth in drinking milk was Belgian manufacturer of milk alternatives, Vandemoortele. The company leads milk alternatives, despite the increasing number of players penetrating the format.
