Hair care was negatively impacted by the 2020 pandemic lockdowns, as with people spending significant amounts of time at home and not meeting with other people and socialising, hair was washed less, as well as other hair treatments being done less often. In 2021, with society gradually opening up and people wanting to present themselves well, hair care registered increased current value and volume growth.
Salon professional hair care registered the highest current value growth in 2021, though from a very small base. This growth was mainly due to salon professional hair suffering the worst performance during the 2020 lockdowns.
Restrictions on imports and currency devaluations has been a positive for domestic players in hair care in Algeria and in 2021, two local companies led the competitive landscape, that is Laboratoires Venus Sapeco and Hamin. Both together accounted for nearly a quarter of value sales and increased further value share in 2021.
Hair care will register muted but positive constant value growth over the forecast period. The full opening of society, combined with population growth, will contribute to value sales.
Hair care is expected to see a slowing of the retail volume growth rate over the course of the forecast period. This slowdown can be attributed to a number of factors, such as increasing maturity and the anticipated worsening of the economic environment.
New product innovation and effective advertising tend to be the driving forces in hair care. Over the forecast period, there will be development of products that offer value-added benefits to consumers, such as vitamins, natural ingredients and different extracts that tie in with the growing health and environmental consciousness among consumers in Algeria.
