Hair care witnessed lower current value growth in 2021 after a big success in 2020 when consumers invested in essential hair products as they spent more time at home. In 2021, hair salons re-opened and consumers returned to previous lifestyle habits and consumption patterns.
There is a rise in local brands with affordable prices competing with the big brands available in the market, playing to the needs of consumers seeking value when making hair care purchases. Top three players Dabur Egypt Ltd, Unilever Mashreq SAE and Procter & Gamble Egypt all saw a decline in share in 2021, as did L'Oréal Egypt in fourth position.
Colourants saw a decline in current value sales in 2021 after a bumper year in 2020. Consumers were colouring their hair at home during the time of salon closures and many are continuing to do so, even following salon reopening’s.
Hair care will continue to see healthy growth over the forecast period but at a steadier pace than the review period. Hair care usage will stabilise overall as consumers resume a more normal life pattern.
Consumers are looking for new and more innovative products with natural ingredients and affordable prices being a high priority. Social media influencers are driving consumers’ awareness of new trends and showcasing new products.
Salon professional hair care products will continue to broaden their appeal through e-commerce channels. More affluent consumers are seeking higher quality hair care products and innovations and are less price sensitive.
