Premium beauty and personal care products were severely impacted the pandemic and the 2020 lockdowns, with current value sales falling. Two factors contributed to the decline.
Puig remained the leader in premium beauty and personal care in value terms in 2021, by virtue of its leading position in premium fragrances with Carolina Herrera. Zohara Parfums, which competes in premium fragrances and premium skin care, was second, whilst LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, which also focuses on premium fragrances, rounded out the top three.
Imported brands account for the majority of value sales in premium beauty and personal care shares, while local producers are more present within mass products. International players such as Puig, LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, Clarins, L'Oréal Groupe and Procter & Gamble are very popular and well established in Algeria.
Premium beauty and personal care will register muted constant value growth over the forecast period. As the economy is expected to continue to struggle, some consumers will trade down from premium to mass.
Premium fragrances and premium colour cosmetics will remain the most popular products over the forecast period. The absence of local brands for both these products, unlike for other products where there are local manufacturing bases, ensure that premium fragrances and colour cosmetics continue to grow and are not challenged by local brands positioned at more affordable prices.
Consumers continue to believe that premium products offer higher quality than mass alternatives. However, many mass producers are now offering products with increasing quality, while maintaining cheaper prices.
