With Uruguay’s borders being closed, sales of premium fragrances registered strong growth in volume and value terms in 2021. Consumers usually buy premium fragrances in duty-free shops, but during 2021 the demand was exclusively focused on stores inside the country.
The COVID-19 pandemic had a positive impact on demand for premium skin care, with dermocosmetics seeing a particularly strong performance. With people spending more time at home during 2020 and 2021 some became more focused on their skin care routines and treatments as they looked to keep their skin looking young and healthy.
Salon professional hair care registered strong growth in volume and value terms in 2021 with this being driven in part by the expansion of e-commerce. Brands of salon professional hair care are now available in e-commerce marketplaces such as Mercado Libre as well as on the websites of parapharmacies/drugstores such as Farmashop.
Despite Uruguay’s borders reopening again in October 2021, there is not expected to be a large shift from local stores to duty-free stores when it comes to buying premium fragrances. According to industry sources, because of the discounts and promotions being offered by local retailers, the prices in duty-free shops are now similar to those offered in local stores.
E-commerce will likely continue playing a key role in the performance of premium beauty and personal care over the forecast period, with the number of consumers familiar with shopping online having increased significantly since the start of the pandemic. As such, leading retail chains such as Farmashop, San Roque, and beauty specialists such as Perfumerias Todo will likely continue to invest heavily in improving their online services.
Natural, organic and vegan beauty and personal care products developed by domestic companies could present a threat to international premium brands over the forecast period. Consumers are becoming increasingly aware of the claims that these new mass beauty and personal care brands are making and the fact that they are no longer the preserve of premium brands.
