Premium beauty and personal care is seeing booming sales, as pandemic restrictions start to lift and lifestyles return to some sense of normality, with more socialising and opportunities to wear cosmetics and fragrances. Consumers with more stable incomes are also becoming increasingly confident in their spending again, further supporting sales of premium beauty and personal care products.
Following global trends, premium skin care, especially facial care, is gaining shares in Azerbaijan. This is partly due to the period of home seclusion, during which many people took to pampering themselves at home in the “home spa” trend.
Professional hair care products is a struggling category in beauty and personal care. This is caused by two factors – firstly, pandemic restrictions have resulted in limited activities for hair salons, and price sensitivity has also grown amongst the majority of consumers.
Premium beauty and personal care in Azerbaijan consists of two major categories – fragrances and facial care (particularly anti-aging and moisturising treatments). These categories are seen as offering the highest quality products against their cheaper alternatives, offering greater results and the most desirable ingredients.
After the 2020-2012 collapse of salon professional hair care, the sub-category is expected to return to its typical sales patterns once the effects of the pandemic are over and consumer lifestyles return to normal. The pace of recovery, however, is yet to be seen depending upon consumers’ economic confidence and whether or not other cheaper products are able to achieve the same results as their more expensive counterparts.
Unlike in many other markets, local premium brands are not very visible in Azerbaijan. In general, domestic beauty and personal care production is rather limited in the country, at a very low scale, and hard to quantify.
