Positive value growth was recorded across tobacco in the Dominican Republic in 2022 despite volume sales of cigarettes falling over the course of the year. Demand for cigars increased significantly due to the full reopening of the local hospitality industry as the few remaining COVID control measures and social distancing restrictions were rescinded.
The falling demand for cigarettes in the Dominican Republic during 2022 can be attributed largely to persistent inflationary pressures, which increased the price of a pack of cigarettes substantially at a time of significant pressure on household incomes. With many local consumers watching their spending very closely, items that are not considered to be household essentials faced considerable pressure on demand, including tobacco.
Philip Morris International (PMI) remained the undisputed leader in tobacco in the Dominican Republic during 2022, with the company’s leadership bolstered by the popularity of its cigarette brands across all price bands, including Marlboro, Nacional, and L&M. In addition, PMI remains almost completely dominant in heated tobacco with its IQOS system and HEETS heated tobacco sticks, which have grown steadily in popularity since their 2018 launch in the Dominican Republic.
The lifting of all COVID-19 control measures in the Dominican Republic during 2021 underpinned a full reopening of the local economy and society. During 2022, this led many consumers to resume their in-person shopping routines, with the majority returning to shopping in colmados, the traditional small local grocers that are a ubiquitous presence in residential neighbourhoods throughout the country.
Over the forecast period, smoking prevalence is set to continue declining as more consumers become aware of the harmful effects associated with traditional cigarette smoking. New product development is thus expected to become increasingly important as consumers move away from cigarettes and towards smokeless tobacco.
