Volume sales of cigarettes declined in 2022 alongside smoking prevalence. While the market is characterised by imported products such as those of Philip Morris and British American Tobacco, despite a strong reduction in contraband, illegal cigarettes remain appealing due to the significant price gap with legal brands.
In 2022, cigarette sales in El Salvador declined as people spent more time outside their homes, visiting restaurants, bars, and nightclubs, where smoking is banned, leading to a reduction in smoking frequency. The prevalence of smoking also continued to decrease, with men having a significantly higher rate than women.
According to industry sources, consumption of tobacco increased dramatically among adults in the country during the pandemic. Moreover, according to the Solidarity Fund for Health (FOSALUD), the country is spending more than USD263 million in treating diseases that are associated with smoking.
Tobacco is not produced within the country. Moreover, many products are sold illicitly at low prices thereby evading tax, with tobacco thus viewed as contributing little to the wider economy.
Moving goods is relatively easy across the country, as roads are generally in good repair. However, the country's road infrastructure remains poor in some rural areas, with government investment hindered by liquidity problems and a high budget deficit.
