In 2022, the tobacco industry in Thailand was seeing some recovery in demand. The industry faced challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic due to government measures aimed at reducing infection rates.
As mentioned, with the relaxation of government restrictions and the reopening of businesses, consumers in Thailand were beginning to spend more time outside and engage in more outdoor activities in 2022. This presented an opportunity for the tobacco industry to capitalise on the recovering market.
Philip Morris retained its leading position in cigarettes in 2022. Following the tax increase in October 2021, all cigarettes saw price increases.
Even though tobacco products are prohibited from being sold or promoted through online platforms in Thailand, there is still a significant number of online retailers operating in this market. Moreover, the popularity of these online channels grew during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly due to the national lockdown policy, and this has led to an enduring shift in consumer behaviour.
For lower-income consumers, any significant increase in price is likely to push them either to quit smoking or to move to more affordable alternatives. This could, however, benefit sales of fine cut tobacco, with many consumers having already embraced the idea of roll-your-own (RYO) cigarettes as a less expensive alternative to purchasing pre-made cigarettes.
