Tobacco in Vietnam returned to normal sales figures in 2022, after seeing a growth slump in 2020-2021 due to the event of COVID-19 and associated social distancing restrictions and lockdowns. However, after the Vietnamese government lifted these restrictions, consumers returned to their out-of-home lifestyles, and this triggered incidences of smoking again.
Electronic stamps for tobacco products became mandatory from 1 July 2022 (Document Circular 23/2021/TT-BTC). This means that both imported tobacco products and domestic tobacco products are now required to be affixed with an electronic stamp, including digital information concerning the products.
Domestic brand Vinataba (Vietnam National Tobacco Corp (Vinataba)) maintained its leading place in tobacco overall, along with top places in both cigarettes and cigars (being the most popular forms of tobacco products in Vietnam). Indeed, as a domestic player, Vinataba sees support from the government in the country.
Small local grocers continue to be the main distribution channel for tobacco products in Vietnam, followed by tobacco specialist stores. Small local grocers are present on almost every street corner in Vietnam, thus catering to consumers in their own neighbourhoods.
