Demand remained under huge pressure across tissue and hygiene in 2023 as negative population growth fuelled by high emigration and low consumer spending due to the ongoing socioeconomic crisis underpinned a generally negative volume sales performance. However, many tissue and hygiene products are still seen as the essential, while the ageing of the population supported sales in adult incontinence.
Lebanon’s population has been in rapid decline since 2020 and the origins of this trend lie in the ongoing socioeconomic crisis. With daily life in Lebanon presenting various major challenges, many people have opted to emigrate in search of a less stressful and difficult way of life.
The Lebanese population has been steadily contracting over a period of many years, a trend that has been accelerated by the ongoing socioeconomic crisis. The population of Lebanon declined at an average of 2.
During 2023, Lebanon continued to face a severe socioeconomic crisis and the ongoing impact of this seemingly intractable crisis continues to have a devastating impact on the lives of the local population. The economic crisis has been in effect since at least 2019, during which time the quality of life has steadily deteriorated for most Lebanese people.
The highly adverse situation with regards to Lebanon’s deeply rooted infrastructure issues continued to deteriorate during over the course of 2023 as the economic crisis continued to cause hardship for many local people. For instance, power cuts were already depressingly common but have now evolved into extended periods of total blackouts and although the situation improved significantly over the course of 2023 as the electricity supply was partially restored, Lebanon has essentially been without a consistent electricity supply for extended periods since the middle of 2021.
It is unlikely that any meaningful recovery will be seen in Lebanon’s economy before the end of the forecast period. This is likely to mean further pressure on demand across all categories of tissue and hygiene, with only very low value growth expected in constant 2023 terms.
