Rising demand continues to be fuelled by rapid economic growth, urbanisation and rising incomes. The spread of Western consumption trends also fuels growth, particularly among young people, who are increasingly informed via social media.
While sales of beauty and personal care products were disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic during the first half of 2020, the underdeveloped nature of most categories meant that sales declines were generally minimal. This is because sales in most categories are heavily dominated by basic essential products for everyday use, with demand thus remaining inelastic in the face of social distancing and the economic pressure that many consumers have felt due to the disruption that the COVID-19 situation has caused in the economy of Bangladesh.
Although a general shutdown was put in place from 26 March to 14 May, major restrictions were not applied. People were able to leave their homes for essential requirements, with grocery stores, pharmacies, banks and other essential businesses remaining open.
Over the course of the review period, a considerable shift was seen in consumer attitudes towards personal grooming and beauty concepts. This shift was fuelled mainly by the growing celebrity culture and rising impact of social media.
After many years of solid economic growth, 2019 saw the economy of Bangladesh enter a period of slower growth, which was signalled by a substantial increase in the cost of living for most people. Due to electricity price hikes, commodity prices shot up 80% over the course of the year, with serious pressure coming on discretionary spending and demand for non-essential products.
Inadequate infrastructure limits the geographic reach of beauty and personal care manufacturers and chained retailers. Many roads in rural regions of the country are not asphalted and thus they are often of poor quality.
