Strong sales growth across beauty and personal care is due to consistent economic development, rapid urbanisation and the shift to modern lifestyles. Poverty is in decline as the economically active population increases.
The arrival of COVID-19 in Ethiopia during the 2020 led most consumers to significantly reconsider their spending on beauty and personal care products. Although it is still too early to accurately assess the full extent of the economic impact of the pandemic and its aftermath in the country, it is clear that consumer spending will have been substantially reduced, especially spending on products that are seen as non-essential.
On 10 April, the Ethiopian parliament approved a 5-month state of emergency, giving the authorities sweeping powers to battle the COVID-19 disease. This included banning all cross-border movement, except for the flow of cargo and essential goods.
Ethiopia is the second most populous country in Africa after Nigeria and its population continues to increase at a very rapid pace. In addition, there is substantial internal migration taking place, with huge numbers of people moving from rural areas of the country to the capital Addis Ababa and other major metropolitan areas.
At the end of the review period, the development of sales of beauty and personal care products continued to be hampered by a number of factors, including poverty, the country’s still high rural population, the limited development of modern retailing and low levels of adult literacy. Since the early 1990s, the country has been following the developmental state ideology in order to emulate the growth seen in the so-called Asian Tiger economies.
Ethiopia’s road network improved significantly over the course of the review period. This was mainly the result of substantial investment from 2013 onwards as part of the country's Growth and Transformation Plan II, which has attracted significant foreign investment.
